Saturday, May 23rd - Zeitner & Sons Night at the Races

Mother's Day Weekend at the Races
By Shannon Lowe

A dry slick track on Mother’s day weekend turned the pit into dust bowl but Mothers in the stands kept clean with a brisk southerly wind keeping the dirt headed in the other direction. Fans were given a little more bang for their buck with the nickel toss, Mother’s Day giveaways and a full night of racing on the smooth surface of Shelby County Speedway’s highbank oval.

With the dry slick racing surface, drivers had to rely on their own tenacity to create traction on a surface that made grip nearly impossible. Sixteen year old Brett Hopp of Harlan, Ia raced out front in the Northern Sport Mod feature as Dylan Petersen chewed through the pack on his way forward. Petersen sparred with Clint Lewellen as Lewellen found a working wet lane on the bottom and used it to gain third then second. At the half way point the pack had lost its competitive bite and racers spread the circumference of the track but the race finished clean with no cautions to bring the field together. Brett Hopp took the victory followed by Shawn Cooney, Dylan Petersen and Dj Doebelin.

Flying Bryan Blessington used his front row starting spot to all of its advantage careening to a substantial lead. Keith Knop wiggled his way through door to door traffic to edge into the second spot but found a runaway Blessington difficult to catch. Farther back in the pack, Mike Nichols challenged Reetz for fifth as the front runners worked into lap traffic. The Mike Stapleton worked his way into position to challenge Knop for second but got caught up on lap traffic, tangling with Dustin Rold who felt like racing the leaders from a lap down. The near miss caused a bottleneck that allowed Blessington to put some more distance between himself and Knop and put Stapleton out of the hunt. Flying Bryan Blessington took the double checkered flags followed by Keith Knop, Devin Smith, Mike Nichols and Daniel Hilsabeck.

After a false start by Alan Hopp, the Late Models had an aggressive restart with Todd Cooney leaning hard into the rear quarter of Hopp determined to not let him run away with the second start. After the front stretch dog fight, Cooney took the lead and in the following lap, Hopp found himself off pace and limped into the pit. Jay Stewart claimed the second spot with Corey Zeitner bent on chasing him down. A restart lined the pair up side by side and though Stewart tried to keep Zeitner far enough to the outside to not have grip, Corey earned himself a speedway stripe clawing his way into second. With no other restarts, Jay couldn’t make up the lost ground and finished third. Todd Cooney earned the trophy for the second week in a row followed by Corey Zeitner, Jay Stewart, Mel Zeitner and Daulton Maassen.

Cody Hilgartner dug in for an impressive first lap lead in the Modified feature race while Jeff Joldersma worked to get around traffic before he could put himself in contention. After first diving to the inside of Jared Hansen for third, he repeated the move to get around Shane Demey for second. With Hilgartner in his sights, Joldersma started to shave distance off the lap by using the extreme inside and reeling Hilgarnter in slowly. A caution stacked the pack right on Hilgartner’s rear push bar and gave Demey a second shot at Joldersma. With the lost momentum, both drivers lost out as the Chris Abelson drove between them stealing the lead and dominated the final ten laps. Abelson picked up the victory, followed by Travis Hatcher, Cody Hilgartner, Ricky Stephan and Jeff James.

The Hobby Stock racers Colby Davis and Daniel Smith collided just under the first green flag of the race sending Davis tumbling down the front stretch. Davis hopped out of the car and waved to fans in the grandstands as rescue crews pulled up under a red flag. With the car on its side, wreckers worked to clear the front stretch and racing was back underway. After a clean restart Corey Madden claimed the lead with Jeff Fink trailing in second as behind them Chuck Madden, Jason Kohl and Austin Lewellen went three wide in the west end all working for the third spot. Jason Kohl claimed the position edging the others on the front stretch and worked to close in on Corey Madden. A restart gave Kohl the chance at the lead and he dove for it using the outside as Shannon Anderson appeared on his rear bumper. Yet another caution set Kohl and Anderson up for a showdown with still more than half a race to run. Kohl got loose on the restart and Anderson ran away with the lead as Kohl slipped back into second. Anderson took the checkered flag with Kohl, Luellen, Corey Madden and Kevin Bruck on the scoreboard behind him.

Racing in the Sport Compact class at Shelby County Speedway has become a family affair with several sets of competitive brothers taking the green flag each week. The green flag dropped on the race and the racers brought their four cylinder speedsters across the scorers line in a tightly wound six pack taking a full three laps to determine a definite leader. Alec Stapleton held the lead as a caution for debris sets up an exciting restart with brothers Cody and Tyler Thompson along the inside and brothers Taylor and Bronson Griffin on the outside. All four set their sites on Alec Stapleton as the green flag fell. Going three wide under the green flag, Cody Thompson claimed the lead and the trip to O’Reilly Auto Parts Victory Lane followed by Taylor Griffin, Alec Stapleton, Corey Stapleton and Bronson Griffin.

Six powerhouse parade laps for the bomber class finished the night for fans. Jordon Bieret led all six with Terry Erwin on his tail. Dillon Magnussen finished third.

Next week racing resumes at Shelby County Speedway as the racers meet to find out who will “Dominate the Dirt”.
