May 19th -- Nickel Toss for Kids!

A NICKEL MADE IS A NICKEL EARNED AT SCS

HARLAN, IA (May 19). Even with graduations on Saturday, fans and cars came out in force to support Shelby County Speedway’s graduation into a new era of racing at the track. The slogan “Racing with a New Attitude” lived up to the hype again for a second week in a row providing exciting racing among the IMCA classes, reasonable pricing for admission and concessions, yummy food, great announcing, entertainment at intermission and an overall safe, family fun atmosphere! Tonight, a nickel toss was held on the front stretch during intermission. The kids (10 and under) were all lined up with fire in their eyes waiting to hear “go”. Once said, the stampede began and the kids made sure no nickel was left behind.

The evening started off with the sport compacts, and the 2x of Alex Fink, who won last week, was off to a strong start and a good lead. The rest of the pack was driving strong and hard, but it looked like Fink would repeat. With the race laps dwindling down, Fink’s car lost momentum and faded backwards. The #84 car of Willy Muhr took advantage and led the final couple of laps to win the race. Fink ended in 4th place. The sport compacts had another night of clean racing, going green to checker with no cautions.

The hobbies were another story; having brought out four cautions this evening. The action started in lap 1, in turn 2 with the #55 car of Jason Fusselman spinning in the center of the track. Somehow, all cars managed to go around him either high and low to avoid a collision and Fusselman was able to bring his car under control and continue the race. On lap 2, again in turn 2, a 3-car pileup occurred bringing out the first caution. All cars were ok and continued the race. On the restart, yet another car going through turn 2 spun but regained control and continued racing with no caution. What is it about turn 2 this evening? Later in the race the #60 car of Tanner Powers and the #20 car of Luke Wanninger were battling hard side-by-side on the front stretch causing #60 to sideswipe along the wall hard to turn #1. A number of cars were still battling for lead position at this point, racing four-wide at times on the track. With this level of intensity, something had to give, and unfortunately for Mike Hansen in the #3 car, he hit the wall on the front stretch and lost his front right tire and part of his front bumper ending his night with only three laps left in the race. Devin Smith (#81), Tanner Powers (#60), and Doug Smith (#12) were battling for the lead with two laps to go when the #55 car of Jason Fusselman and #75 of Kurt Hansen collided on the front stretch bringing out the caution. With green, white, checker to go, the restart and the remaining laps were pretty quiet and tame compared to the earlier portion of the race. Devin Smith (#81) took home the trophy this night.

After all the heart pounding excitement from the hobby class, the sport mods brought everyone’s heartbeat back down to normal. The field of 7 cars raced clean from green to checker, with #95 of Justin Bonney going to the winner’s circle this evening.

Up next were the stock cars, and early on, it looked like a repeat of the hobby feature. In lap 2, the #z06 car of Jesy Webb got stuck on the tire of Bill Reetz (#26) which turned Webb’s car 90 degrees to the track. Both cars were still going forward down the backstretch when all of a sudden Webb’s car broke free and continued racing. Reetz pulled into pit row. During this commotion, Tanner Partridge (#29) took a commanding lead of the race. With 10 laps of the 15-lap feature left to race, #01u Chris Ullrich blew on the front stretch. He was in 5th place at this point and finished the night 13th. After this, the race leader Partridge was having problems and started to get passed. The #35 of Donovan Smith and #85 of Dustin Smith were battling for 1st place. Coming out of turn 4 for the checker, the #85 was riding the rear bumper of #35, but couldn’t push him out of the way. Donovan Smith won the race. Partridge’s car coming out of turn 4 for the checker blew, causing him to finish the race in 12th.

The late models followed the stock car show for a 20-lap feature event. The #1 car of Dave Jorgensen pulled away early to have a commanding lead of the race from green to checker. Phil Miller, the #17m car, still had the #1 car in his sights and was flying around the track to try to catch up. On lap 7, the #17m car passed by the Colt #45 car of Barry Sorensen taking over second place. It looked like Miller had a chance of catching Jorgensen, when in turn #2, Miller went a little too high and slammed the right rear side of his car into the guardrail. The #17m car continued racing, but some of the wind from his sail disappeared and Sorensen was able to regain his second place before the checker was thrown. Jorgensen finished first, while Miller had to settle for third.

The evening ended with the 20-lap feature of the modifieds. Racing was strong and tough throughout the entire event, with three and sometime four-wide racing occurring. The first caution was brought out on lap 4 for the #1 car of Dave Hulsebus. The #3L car of Bub LeRette had a strong lead, with Dale Ransom (#2), Craig Reetz (#1r), Jeff Anderson (#78), and Jeff Stephens (#92) battling for 2nd through 5th position. With four laps to go, the leader went sideways on the backstretch ending his night and bringing out the caution. Reetz took full advantage of the restart and pulled away immediately from the rest of the pack to take the checker. LeRette ended up 12th for the night. Anderson, Bruck, Stephens, and Ransom finished 2nd through 5th, respectively.
